HISTORY The nursery's historyWay back in 1985 Mr. Vincent Borg came up with the idea of forming a Nursery for children & youngsters from the Capital. Together with Mr. John Curmi , Vincent presented this idea to the Valletta F.C. Committee presided by Mr. Joe Caruana Curran.The VFC Committee agreed with the idea and immediately formed a sub- committee that was made up of Mr. John Curmi, & Mr. John Micallef as members and Mr. Benny Pace was appointed Secretary. During that season the Secretary notified the Youth Football Association that Valletta F.C. was in a position to take part in the YFA competitions of the U 15 & U 13 categories. These two categories were coached by Mr. John Curmi & Mr. John Micallef.After two successful trial years the Valletta F.C. Committee decided to form the Valletta F.C. Nursery and the first committee was thus formed.The Members entrusted were:President- Mr. Alfred Scalpello.Secretary- Mr.John Micallef.Members- Mr. John Sgendo Mr. Benny Cordina.The Technical Staff appointed were:Coach U 16- Mr. Victor Cassar.Coach U 14- Mr. John MicallefCoach U 13- Mr. Joseph Bajada.The first Committee decided that the Year of the formal foundation of the VFC Nursery will be 1988. During the years the nursery flourished and other age groups were introduced. Ten years after its inception i.e 1998 during the Tenth Anniversary Commemoration Gala Dinner the Nursery President Mr. A Scalpello together with the Secretary Mr. Victor Spiteri presented momentos to the all those who worked through these years to establish the Valletta F.C. nursery as one of the leading nurseries on the Islands, noticeably Mr. John Curmi as the Founder and his dedication & comitment. Mr. John Micallef for the long service and contribution in the administration and the technical sector. Mr. Benny Pace the Valletta F.C. General Secretary for his commitment, dedication & loyalty throughout the years. Mr. Joe Carruana Curran, Valetta F.C. president for his encouragement, moral & financial support during the first ten years. Mr. Caruana Curran for many years was the main Sponsor of the nursery. Mr. Scalpello was was then honoured for his dedication, commitment & long service by the VFC President Mr. Caruana Curran. Mr. Scalpello was later appointed as the first Honorary President of the Nursery.Mr. Scalpello was then succeeded by Mr. Joseph Azzopardi as the second President. Mr. Azzopardi is still the Sponsor of the U/16 squad.Mr. Joseph Borda was appointed as the Honorary President of the Nursery during the 17th Annual presentation as he was instrumental in the renovation of the Salinos Grounds.The subsequent Annual Presentation Mr. Azzopardi announced that he was to resign as President due to personal commitments & Mr. Kevin Gauci a member of the VFC Committee was appointed instead..

Early YearsIn the run up of season 2006/07 The VFC Head Coach Mr. Paul Zammit was appointed Technical Directr & his assistance Mr. Anton Cremona was appointed Head Coach of the Nursery.As the Youth Football Sector was passing through constant changes the committee together with the Technical Director & Mr. Cremona agreed to include, A School of Football, as part of the name of the Nursery and hence the Nursery's name became, Valletta Football Club Nursery - A School of Football.This was a demonstration that the aim of the Nursery was to teach football to teach children & youths the actual knowledge of the modern game. Together with this change the Administration & the Technical staff came up with a new slogan, PRIDE.Every letter signifies a different message as herewith:P - Personality- a must for every child.R - Respect - respect towards other children of your squad and other teams, coaches, parents, committee members, match officials etc.I - Insight of the game - vision & knowledge.D - Dedication - dedication, commitment & sacrifices for all those who love the game of football.E - Education - the pillar for all those who want to learn not only as a footballer but also as a human being.The new structure was introduced to all parents during the Nursery's Annual General Meeting of the 3rd September 2006. All involved accepted this new idea & system.Mr Renato Zampa was appointed as President in 2008 as Mr. Gauci was again elected to the VFC Committee and with his involvement with Valletta's Minor Team it was appropriate to release Mr. Gauci from his duties with the Nursery, although he is still the representative of the main committee.In Season 2009 the committee appointed Mr. Michael Farrugia as its Head Coach and later on Mr Hank Theunissen was brought from Holland as Technical Director.A number of Nursery Products played or are still playing with our Premier team namely- Stefan Giglio who also played for the Bulgarian Premiere sides CSKA Sofia & Lokomotiv Sofia.Gilbert Agius for a long time VFC's Captain who also played in Italy's Serie C1 with Pisa.Others are:-Miguel Montfort, Jonathan Bondin, Stephen Bezzina, Justin Grioli, Ian Zammit, Mark Barbara, Brandon Bonnici, Rennie Forace, Kurt Maxi Magro, Dylan Zarb, Clive Spiteri & Dylan Grima.The Nursery is currently planning to reorganise and go forward under the steady stewrdship of its current President and the whole committee to further enhance the chances of children living in the City & beyond.
